Do not italicize bracketed information, even if the title of the work is italicized. You can create your own wording for the bracketed description (see Section 9.21). Square brackets indicate that the writer has provided the information and that it may not appear on the actual work.

providing translations of titles for references that are in a different language than that of the paper (e.g., books in a different language see also Section 9.38).

indicating that the source may not consist of text on a page (e.g., films, data sets, computer software, and mobile apps).

identifying when a source is outside the typical peer-reviewed literature (e.g., fact sheets, brochures, PowerPoint slides, artwork, social media posts, YouTube videos).

identifying the context in which a work was published or presented (e.g., dissertations and theses, conference presentations).

The descriptions serve various purposes, including the following:

If the style is not set up to show Cited Pages (most of the journal output styles are not) then you add page numbers in the Suffix: field, including punctuation,Į.g.

If the bibliographic style you are using is set up to display Cited Pages (APA 6 th and Harvard AGIMO style are) then you enter the page numbers next to the box labelled Pages:.

To do this, highlight the option to * Display as: Author (Year) and then click on the OK button. If using an author-date style and you wish to use the author's name as part of the text, you will want to exclude the author's name from the EndNote citation. To omit an author’s name from a citation: You will now see a dialogue box allowing you to format the citation.

Select the Edit & Manage Citation (s) command from the Toolbar (or right-click the mouse).

Click on the citation you wish to change.

You must use ‘Edit & Manage Citation(s)’: If you make any changes within the brackets of a citation it will disappear when the bibliography re-formats. Once you have inserted a citation, you should not edit it directly.
